Exhibition Place is a public asset owned by the City of Toronto - it is the largest urban parkland entertainment venue in Toronto. Its new environmental plan was adopted and its key goal is making Exhibition Place energy self-sufficient by 2010. It was the first fairground in the world to be lit by electricity and the 2002 base data shows an annual consumption of 30 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 22 million cubic metres of natural gas.

1) Venue Naming Rights - the fees of $7 million for the 10 year sponsorship of Direct Energy Centre (the largest entertainment venue within Exhibition place) are earmarked for environmental initiatives.2) Home of the first permanent trubine in the City of Toronto - Capable of generating 1 million kilowatt hours of power per year, the durbine also helps to displace some of the chemicals responsible for smog and acid rain, it move 1800 tonnes of CO2 annually. All energy produced Wind Turbine is used to power the buildings at Exhibition Place.3) Implementation of a 100 kilowatt Photovoltaic Power Generation Plan - launched in 2006, this is the largest single PV Plant in Canada3) Trigeneration System - largest municipal trigeneration system in Canada to address the heating, colling and electrival loads of several of the larger buildings. The generator is 84% efficient and the waste heat produced by the generator is recovered and supplied in the form of hot water to the absorption chiller which in turn provides cooling.

There will be countless benefits for both the cities economy and citizens this project. These include:Individuals: The Direct Energy Innovation Centre - a permanent educational exhibit located within the Centre, explores energy use and the environment. Interactive displays showcase sources of energy and methods of energy conservation.Wind Turbine information stations - there are information stations set up around the Wind Turbine and an education program has been implemented as part of the Grade 5 curriculum of the Toronto District School Board.Society:Exhibition place participates in the Hydrogen Fuel Cell project in partnership with the Hydorgen Village and Hydrogenics Corporation. Exhibition Place is the only site in the Greater Toronto Area with a public Hydrogen Refueling station. Additionally a reduction on emissions lessens the number of "smog days" in Toronto, while Exhibition Place switching to clean energy assists the provincial government with its plan to shut down coal fired electrical plants.Economy:The consolidated savings of the key energy components of the Self-Sufficiency Project are approximantely $900,000 per year.Environment:The environmental benefits associated with Exhibition Place are multiple, they include the following:1) Additional production of energy and/or reduction in energy use (combine) of 15 million kilowatt-hours annually; 2) Reduction in caron dioxide emissions of 11,000 tonnes annually;3) Multiple forestry initiatives on the fairgrounds, with over 3,000 trees planted an an annual budgetary commitment of $50,000 to add to the urban forest; and4) Achivement of a 62% waste diversion target in 2006 and a target of 70% waste diversion in 2007 within Exhibition Place.

This project will help mainstream clean energy by displaying it to all Torontonians and millions of visitors to its grounds. Exhibition Place was the first fairgrounds in the world to be lit by electricty in 1882, with the innauguration of the Enviroment & Self-Sufficiency project will allow Exhibition Place to demonstrate emerging "green" technologies to millions of visitors. The WindShare program has implemented an education program as part of the Grade 5 Toronto District School Board curriculum. Developed a permanent public education space featuring an interactive energy exhibit in the Direct Energy Centre with a goal of educationg visitors about energy and the benefits of energy efficiency and conservation.

Individuals:As the site of the New Mobility Hub, a project sponsored by Transport Canada and the City of Toronto it will allow users to have easy access to a variety of transit systems, carsharing vehicles, bicycles, bike parking, tasxis and a walkable enviornment all at one central location on the Exhibition Place grounds.Society:The Direct Energy Centre Trigeneration System will demonstrate the fesibility of a trigeneration plant in a major public building, as such it will showcase this innovative technology. The WindShare Wind Turbine is an icon for the City of Toronto's commitment to green initiatives and will attract international visitors to Toronto.Environment:Will achieve 30%, 60%, and 100% waste diversion by 2003, 2006, and 2012 respectively.

1) Waste diversion project rendering the Direct Energy Centre 70% waste-free by 2007.2) A Wind Turbine, the first permanent turbine in the City of Toronto.3) Utility vehicles with hydrogen-powered fuel cells that are employed on site.4) A green roof pilot project atop the Horse Palace building.5) S-M-A-R-T Movement employee trip reduction program that was implemented to limit single occupancy vehicle trips.6) Perishable food donations and organic recycling - working with local agencieds to donate perishable foods to shelters and food banks in the City of Toronto.

The Exhbition Place projects are using the data being generated by many of the demonstration projects to inform the construction of future systems; for example the implementation of the photovoltaic power generation plany will lead to the leveraging of a 1.0 - 1.5 megawatt system in the future.
